One-stage and two-stage DEA estimation of the effects of contextual variables

چکیده
Two-stage data envelopment analysis (2-DEA) is commonly used in productive efficiency analysis to estimate the effects of operational conditions and practices on performance. In this method the DEA efficiency estimates are regressed on contextual variables representing the operational conditions. We reexamine the statistical properties of the 2-DEA estimator, and find that it is statistically consistent under more general conditions than earlier studies assume. We further show that the finite sample bias of DEA in the first stage carries over to the second stage regression, causing bias in the estimated coefficients of the contextual variables. This bias is particularly severe when the contextual variables are correlated with inputs. To address this shortcoming, we apply the result that DEA can be formulated as a constrained special case of the convex nonparametric least squares (CNLS) regression. Applying the CNLS formulation, we develop a new semi-nonparametric one-stage estimator for the coefficients of the contextual variables that directly incorporates contextual variables to the standard DEA problem. The proposed method is hence referred to as one-stage DEA (1-DEA). Evidence from Monte Carlo simulations suggests that the new 1-DEA estimator performs systematically better than the conventional 2-DEA estimator both in deterministic and noisy scenarios. 2012 Elsevier B.V. Evaluating Contextual Variables Affecting Productivity Using Data Envelopment Analysis
A DEA-based stochastic estimation framework is presented to evaluate contextual variables affecting productivity. Conditions are identified under which a two-stage procedure consisting of DEA followed by regression analysis yields consistent estimators of the impact of contextual variables. Conditions are also identified under which DEA in the first stage followed by maximum likelihood estimati...
متن کاملOne-stage estimation of the effects of operational conditions and practices on productive performance: Asymptotically normal and efficient, root-n consistent StoNEZD method
Understanding the effects of operational conditions and practices on productive efficiency can provide valuable economic and managerial insights. The conventional approach is to use a twostage method where the efficiency estimates are regressed on contextual variables representing the operational conditions. The main problem of the two-stage approach is that it ignores the correlations between ...
متن کاملEvaluating the Effect of Operational Conditions and Practices on Warehouse Performance
Analyzing warehouse performance across different environments is critical to improving overall productivity and reducing costs. Although two-stage DEA estimators have been shown to be statistically consistent, the finite sample bias of DEA in the first stage carries over to the secondstage regression, which causes bias in the estimated coefficients of the contextual variables. The bias is parti...
متن کاملSensitivity Analysis in Two-Stage DEA
Data envelopment analysis (DEA) is a method for measuring the efficiency of peer decision making units (DMUs) which uses a set of inputs to produce a set of outputs. In some cases, DMUs have a two-stage structure, in which the first stage utilizes inputs to produce outputs used as the inputs of the second stage to produce final outputs. One important issue in two-stage DEA is the sensitivity of...
متن کاملRanking Efficient DMUs in Two-stage Network DEA with Common Weights method
Two stages DEA models are used in many fields of management and industry. One of the concepts that has attracted the attention of researchers in the theory of production is the concept of ranking the units with a two-stage network. A unit ranking can provide useful information to decision makers (DMUs) about optimal decision making activities. This concept defines the superiority of a unit in t...
